  • July 22, 2017 Underground Railroad presentation at Hooray for Books!, Alexandria, VA: 3-4 pm.

Cindy would love to speak at your school:

Enhance your students’ understanding of savery and the Underground Railroad with Cindy’s interactive school programs. Whether watching her thirty-five minute PowerPoint in an auditorium,  or in a classroom setting sampling ash cakes, a staple of the slaves’ diet, Cindy encourages kids to imagine themselves as characters from  our past. She engages them in both the horrors and triumphs of our national story of slavery and freedom. Cindy’s expert knowledge about the Underground Railroad helps kids experience history in an exciting way.

What people are saying about Cindy’s programs:

“What a special experience you provided for the students: to meet a writer and learn about the craft of writing. Equally important was that you provided the opportunity to learn about the Underground Railroad and one boy’s struggle to gain freedom from slavery. Your activities of designing their own folders with the North Star, experiencing the taste of ‘ash cake,’ and writing their own steps to reaching their own goals, all helped them to understand what Moses (the protagonist) experienced.” Erica Rogler and Margie Young, Wyoming County Cultural Center at the Dietrich Theater.

“Mrs. Noonan’s presentation for a large group was engaging and energetic. Her knowledge of the subject matter allowed children to better understand the time period that her characters lived in….the students gained much insight into what it takes to be an author and the writing process behind it….She allowed them to go beyond the pages and bring her story truly to life.” Sara Ergott, sixth grade teacher, Tunkhannock Middle School.
