I just returned from a fun-filled, heart-warming trip to see my grandchildren in Virginia Beach. My plane was on time and my connecting flights actually connected when they were supposed to. This proud grandma watched her two granddaughters, Ellie and Millie, shine in their school production of School House Rock. I got to watch my daughter Kimberly shine, too. She produced and directed the show. Anybody remember those songs from Saturday morning cartoons? Well, my head is swirling with those familiar tunes. I think I can even sing the preamble to the constitution for you.
Another wonderful function I attended is an annual event at Atlantic Shores Christian School called Grandparents Day. Grandparents from all over the country came to be the honored guests in their grandchildren’s classrooms. We were treated to a hot breakfast, handmade gifts, and special essays written about us by our grandchildren. A special assembly starred all the children singing songs to bless, honor, and thank their grandparents for the influence they have had in their grandkids’ lives. What an uplifting day.
Several children told interesting historical tidbits about their grandparents at the assembly. One recounted a story about his grandfather who fought in WWII. Since I write about Underground Railroad history, the significance of connecting with our past did not escape me. Kudos to this school that understands the importance of bringing together the generations. Thanks Atlantic Shores!
