Black-white-hands-heartSince I write historical fiction for kids about slavery and the Underground Railroad inDark Enough  To See the Stars, I am keenly interested in the recent developments that have stirred up racial tensions.

We hear all the bad news. We see riots and anger played out on television. But we never see the heroes who work to repair the damage caused by years of mistrust and injustice on both sides.

In the Bible, Hebrews chapter eleven lists the heroes of faith who followed God despite tremendous opposition. Many people today who follow their example have become champions of faith as well. Some quietly help their neighbors. Others become activists and suffer persecution for it. All of them follow God as best they know how.

I want to publish blogs about heroes. Specifically, I plan to write about brave men and women who labor to repair the racial divide, including those who have done so in the past. Follow me as I blog about people, many of them little known, who have taken the road less traveled to achieve this goal.

It’s important to identify the people who are trying to bring the races together.

Bishop Harry Jackson is one such modern hero who actively works to seek racial reconciliation. He wants to rebuild foundations of faith and family in the black community. Check out his website, which mobilizes leaders to make a difference. He is leading a movement to protect families, help create wealth, reform education, and change health care.

Every small act of love counts.

What’s my contribution? I travel to schools and educate children about slavery and the Underground Railroad. I also let kids know that every child has a destiny –something that slave children were never allowed to experience. When we understand the devastating impact slavery had on people, we are better able to help provide modern day solutions. Knowing about our past helps us prepare for the future.

Follow me as I find other heroes who encourage us to change our world for the better. If you have a story about a hero of faith, send it to me. I would love to shout it out.
