I spent the past few weeks celebrating Christmas with kids and grandkids, some of whom I see only a few times a year. Once again we built memories—sledding with grandpa, memorable meals, and lots of fellowship. But what happens when the fun is over? All of us shift gears as we trek into the New Year.
New Year’s resolutions abound, but keeping them is another story. Here are my seven steps to succeed at New Year’s promises.
- Don’t look back. We all regret decisions we wish we made, or ones we wish we hadn’t. This year is a chance to start over. God forgives us for our shortcomings, so we need to forgive ourselves. Brooding about the past only darkens the future. God has good plans for us. Ask Him what yours are.
- Count your blessings. Complaining is easy. Being thankful takes effort. When we focus on the good things God has provided, our perspective changes. We see the big picture and become positive people who find joy in everyday things.
- Dream big. God has a vast imagination. Remember, He created the world for His pleasure. He created us in His image. That means we can dream big, too. If your dream is overwhelming, that’s okay. God never gives us dreams we can do by ourselves, only ones that require His help.
- Don’t give up. Big dreams take time. My dreams have been to raise a family and become a writer. Both dreams took decades to accomplish and were fraught with many setbacks. Perseverance and hard work yield big rewards.
- Treasure each moment. While we race toward the future, we can’t overlook the present. Take time to enjoy life right now. Kids grow up fast. Cherish each day.
- God is in control. Worry steals our energy, time, and joy. It accomplishes nothing and can keep us from seeing the answers God has provided. Our destiny is in His hands.
- Spend time with God. Believe it or not, God loves being with His kids. He isn’t annoyed with our shortcomings, but rather delights in fellowshipping with us. We don’t have to go it alone. He is here to help us. And guess what? When we listen to Him and His word, He gives us direction for our lives.
