I just started taking a writing course by one of the most prolific fiction authors today, James Patterson. This man’s success writing fiction makes every wannabe bestselling author drool. Is this is my ticket to fame? No. But I did need something to jumpstart me on my next book.
I learned some interesting things about the man. I was familiar with his plethora of novels for adults (300 million sold and counting), but had no idea he writes four or five children’s books every year. More importantly, he actively encourages young people to read. His website readkiddoread.com aims to help parents find exciting and educational reading for their children.
James has also started his own children’s imprint with Little Brown & Co. called Jimmy Patterson, and recently donated $1.75 million to school libraries. This man is serious about helping kids develop a love for reading.
I just ordered an historical fiction recommended on his site called Blood on the River: James Town 1607, by Elisa Carbone. It sounds like an exciting book for boys that also teaches history. Just my cup of tea. I’ve been researching the Revolutionary War for my next novel, but am also toying with a plot about a cabin boy on the Mayflower. Maybe this book will inspire me.
I’m glad there are people like James out there trying to resurrect the lost art of reading. I hope my novel, Dark Enough to See the Stars, about a slave boy who runs away on the Underground Railroad, will inspire kids to a life-long love of reading.
